Sony Ericsson have added to their outstanding range of walkman phones with the release of the W980i.
As you would expect from any phone carrying the walkman brand, the W980i has been designed with music in mind!
This phone is equipped with a great Mp3 player that is a pleasure to listen to.
The capacity for the mp3 player is stated as being 8000 songs, thogh that is a little optimistic. We would suggest it is closer to 6500 depending on the track lenghts, but either way, it is a lot!
Whilst music can be played via the loudspeaker of this phone, the real benefit of this quality player can only be appreciated via a good set of headphones.
To that end Sony Ericsson have bundled a handsfree stereo (HPM-77) headset, though not up to Sennheiser standards, they never the less do a good job.
The w980i is a flip / clamshell design, which is increasingly unusual for Ericsson, who have been focussing on bar style handsets for some time now.
The front of the clamshell has been designed to mimic the appearance of an mp3 player with “music style controls” on the outer casing.
This phone offers “Haptic Feedback” for an enhanced user experience.
For connectivity with other devices Sony Ericsson have added an FM transmitter which allows you to stream your music to other compatable devices. This is a really neat feature which we have not seen many phones implement.

With the recent announcement of Sony Ericssons PlayNow Arena this phone will be able to directly access an estimated five million music tracks.
Unforutunately the “PlayNow Arena” seems to have been stalled, with the latest press release now quite out of date.
There is no reason to assume PlayArena this will not go ahead, considering Sony’s involvement in the music industry it would be a logical move.

In the mean time you can always check out Play Now Uncut which is a download site for unsigned acts, though, that also seems to have stalled with very few downloads currently listed :-(.

Sony Ericssons stated aim is to integrate the W980i’s “TrackID” feature which will allow you to find the name of un identified tracks using the PlayNow arena service.
However, Sonys ambitions for PlayNow Arena extend beyond music as they intend to distribute a full range of media, including moveis and ring tones.
This is a really neat trick and shows how seriously Sony Walkman are in developing their products by providing a fully integreated service to rival i-tunes.

This will give the W980i and subsequent models full integration into a huge library of music, medaia, ring tones and other downloads.

In additoin to the great new music features and services being offered, the W980i has all the usual trappings such as:

  • A 3.2 megapixel camera
  • Screen Rotation
  • An FM radio
  • High Speed Download Packet Access Mobile Broadband (essential for swift music downloads)
  • Quadband compatability for the globe trotters amongst us!
